You always need "A Guy". In business, this means someone that won't tell you lies. Who's the guy (or woman) you go to for The Truth? Unfortunately, as the cliche goes, most people don't want the truth and/or can't handle the truth. When it comes to business, fight this urge and find your guy. As mentioned in a previous post, before you start your business, find your guy or guys. Go through every single aspect including all of your finances. This includes your personal finances, business budget, spending habits, spending projections, areas of concerns....everything.
The tough part is, finding your guy. First off, this person needs to ask the questions and have some idea of business, but doesn't need much. They are providing the questions, not the answers. You have to have no negative feelings about this person. You have to feel that they respect you personally and professionally. Then everything they tell you is 'business' and based on their honest thoughts. They are taking the time to talk, listen and think with you. The things they tell you that may sting a little bit are probably the things that are the most truthful and helpful. Spouses can't be your guy. Rarely can family members. You aren't really totally open to what they have to say.
What are some truths that you have been told? I was told I had no entrepreneurial spirit. The person ended up being wrong, but it helped to understand what he saw as the mindset an entrepreneur had to have and how I seemed to lack this element. I didn't know this man very well, but he took an hour out of his day as a Human Resources Director to talk to me and he could care less whether or not I liked what he said. I knew one thing for sure....When I left his office, I didn't get a single word of BS.
My other guy told me that if I wanted a PR/Promotion website, my own website shouldn't look like crap (As it did). This is a friend that I hold in high regard and gives his honest thoughts whether solicited or if he just notices something. For some reason, over the last 20 years, he feels comfortable saying what he thinks and I find a unique wisdom in what he observes and advises.
Some wonderful people don't have the make-up to be your guy. Often times your guy/s has to have a little a**hole in them. Not mandatory but often times it works out that way. I use the term a**hole as a compliment. I have other words I use when I dislike someone. A**hole is a compliment. Using Denver Nuggets coach George Karl's dictionary, it means being honest, tough and sometimes anti-authority.
As mentioned in a previous post, every business should get a loan. Go to a banker, have an underwriting committee review your business plan. They act as your guy and will ask the tough questions before loaning you money. But not everything has to do with money. You don't need to follow every piece of your guy's advice....but you need the advice. Who's your guy?
There's more....There's always more
